WOOD & METAL POST HARDWARE GUIDE

Wood-Post vs. Metal-Post Cable Railing Fittings

Start with the post interface, then match run geometry, mounting method, cable construction and diameter.

MR.RAIL cable railing fittings arranged for wood and metal post applications

Cable railing fittings for wood posts and metal posts are not selected from appearance alone. The post material changes the attachment interface, while the stair or level condition changes the fitting geometry. Mounting access, cable construction and cable diameter complete the specification.

MR.RAIL separates its standard surface-mount Quick Lock hardware into wood-post and metal-post families. Its through-post Quick Lock families can serve approved wood- or metal-post arrangements, while the standard surface-mount Swage family is for wood-post stair or level runs. Each application family is available in size-coded models for 1/8, 5/32 and 3/16-inch cable.

This guide helps purchasers, contractors, distributors and DIY users choose a product family before requesting a quotation. It does not establish post strength, spacing, loads or code compliance. Those project decisions require the complete railing design, current instructions and the responsible local professional or authority.

Why post material is an early selection decision

A cable end fitting has to connect the cable to the end-post arrangement and provide the intended adjustment or termination function. The cable-facing portion may look similar across two products, but the post-facing portion can be different. A wood-post surface connection and a prepared metal-post connection therefore belong to different MR.RAIL product families.

Run geometry is equally important. Stair and angled runs need a family designed to follow the cable direction. Level and straight runs use a straight configuration. A project description that says only “wood deck” or “metal railing” does not identify whether the required fitting is angled, straight, surface-mounted or through-post.

For an accurate takeoff, describe every independent cable section with five facts: post material, stair or level geometry, surface or through-post mounting, cable construction and cable diameter. This prevents a common ordering error—selecting a correct diameter in the wrong application family.

Wood-post projects have three standard routes: surface-mount Quick Lock, through-post Quick Lock, and surface-mount Swage. The correct route depends on the planned connection workflow, the cable and the available access around the end posts.

Surface-mount Quick Lock for wood posts

MR-01 / MR-11 / MR-21 are the wood-post Quick Lock families for stair or angled runs. MR-02 / MR-12 / MR-22 are the corresponding families for level or straight runs. Both use a push-in Quick Lock cable connection and require matching-diameter 1×19 cable.

Through-post Quick Lock for wood posts

MR-05 / MR-15 / MR-25 cover stair or angled through-post runs. MR-06 / MR-16 / MR-26 cover level or straight through-post runs. These families are categorized for approved wood- or metal-post through-post arrangements. The post path, rear access and model-specific preparation must be confirmed before work begins.

Surface-mount Swage for wood posts

MR-08 / MR-18 / MR-28 are the standard surface-mount Swage families for wood-post stair or level runs. Their swivel-base arrangement follows the run direction. Unlike Quick Lock, the Swage connection requires the specified permanent crimping workflow and accepts matching-diameter 1×19 or 7×7 cable.

Metal-post projects can use the dedicated surface-mount Quick Lock families or the approved through-post Quick Lock families. The intended post preparation must be established before choosing between those routes. Do not substitute a wood-post surface model because its cable-end appearance is similar.

Surface-mount Quick Lock for metal posts

MR-03 / MR-13 / MR-23 are the metal-post Quick Lock families for stair or angled runs. MR-04 / MR-14 / MR-24 are for level or straight runs. These families use the prepared metal-post attachment specified for the selected model and accept matching-diameter 1×19 cable.

Through-post Quick Lock for metal posts

The MR-05 / MR-15 / MR-25 stair families and MR-06 / MR-16 / MR-26 level families can be considered where the approved metal-post layout uses a through-post path. Verify post openings, access, washers or other required components from the current model instructions rather than copying a detail from a surface-mount installation.

Surface mount and through post answer different questions

Post material identifies what the fitting connects to. Mounting method identifies how it reaches and engages that post. A surface-mount fitting attaches at the post face according to its model-specific arrangement. A through-post fitting passes through a prepared end-post opening and requires suitable access on the opposite side.

Neither mounting route should be treated as automatically better. The correct choice is the one approved for the post construction, cable path, run geometry, available access and desired connection method. Where a wall, trim piece or another structural element limits access, show that condition in the inquiry instead of assuming a through-post component can be tightened later.

Stair geometry remains a separate filter after mounting is selected. Angled washers, hinged bodies or swivel bases are product-family features for particular arrangements. A level-run model should not be rotated or improvised to perform a stair-family function.

The cable specification does not change with the post material

Wood versus metal determines the post interface, but cable compatibility is controlled by the connection method and size family. The MR.RAIL rule is direct:

  • Quick Lock: matching-diameter 1×19 stainless steel cable only.
  • Swage: matching-diameter 1×19 or 7×7 stainless steel cable.

State both diameter and construction. “1/8-inch cable” is incomplete because it does not say whether the cable is 1×19 or 7×7. The 01–09 family represents 1/8 inch, the 11–19 family represents 5/32 inch with the confirmed model gaps, and the 21–29 family represents 3/16 inch with the confirmed model gaps. Use the cable railing fitting size guide for the full map.

MR-09 / MR-19 / MR-29 are release tools for their matching Quick Lock size families. They help reposition or remove compatible cable before final tensioning; they are not tensioners and are not used with Swage hardware.

Plan mixed-material and multi-geometry projects by section

A single project can contain wood end posts, metal end posts, level deck runs, stair runs and through-post conditions. Do not force the entire project into one model family. Divide it into independent cable sections and classify each section using the actual end conditions.

For every section, note the material at both ends, the run direction, mounting access, cable construction, diameter and connection preference. If the two ends differ, provide a marked drawing or clear photographs so the product arrangement can be reviewed. A product-family guide cannot confirm an unusual mixed end condition from a general description.

Keep quantities separate by model family. This makes the quotation easier to verify and prevents stair fittings, straight fittings and size families from being combined under one generic line item. It also helps distributors and OEM buyers specify packaging and labeling without losing application details.

Wood-versus-metal ordering checklist

  1. Identify both end posts. Record wood, metal or a mixed condition for every independent cable section.
  2. Separate stair and level runs. Do not use one count for different geometries.
  3. Confirm mounting access. State surface mount or through post and note any limited rear access.
  4. Record cable construction. Confirm 1×19 or 7×7 from a reliable specification.
  5. Record cable diameter. Select 1/8, 5/32 or 3/16 inch before choosing the size-coded model.
  6. Select Quick Lock or Swage. Match the cable and installation workflow to the connection method.
  7. List exact model quantities. Separate each application and size family in the inquiry.
  8. Review current instructions. Confirm post preparation, tools and sequence before installation.

For an OEM, private-label, wholesale or project quotation, also provide destination, packaging and labeling requirements, documentation needs and requested quantities. Price, MOQ, stock, lead time and included components must be confirmed in the current quotation rather than inferred from this guide.
